On the road to YS

First time ever vinyl release of two extraordinary documents, dated 1971, by the legendary “Balletto di Bronzo”.

“On the Road to Ys, ” is a landmark in Balletto di Bronzo’s history, because it is the demo recording made by the band in 1971 at Phonogram studios Milan, featuring the embryonic versions of two songs that would later be merged into YS (Introduzione and Secondo Incontro), with English vocals, and arrangements that are quite different than the final tracks. However, these demos will convince Phonogram to offer the band a record deal. In 1972 they released YS. The rest is history.

Taken form master tapes, and remastered by Gianni Leone and Nicola di Gia in 2010. Also featuring a bonus track: an unreleased live version of “La tua casa comoda “.

High Tension vol.35 – Calibro 35 plays Lesiman

“High Tension vol. 35 / Calibro 35 plays Lesiman” slightly shifts the quartet’s action scope still towards music for films but, especially in this case, unrelated to the typical soundtrack context; the reference is the so-called ‘library music’ which, as the term itself suggests, can be defined as a discotheque made of sounds and compositions rich in experimentation, sometimes avant-garde and label-free, which film directors drew from to sonorize their works. This is a world which Calibro 35 are undoubtedly related to from the beginning, but that they had never dealt with as strongly as in this record: here the four-piece, accompanied by Sebastiano De Gennaro on percussion and Luisa Santacesaria on piano, reworks some compositions by the famous Paolo Renosto / Lesiman firstly published in the early ’70s.

Suspiria (Blue Iris vinyl)

After the incredible debut of “Profondo Rosso” (Deep Red), the soundtrack of the eponymous 1975 film directed by Dario Argento, no one could ever imagine that shortly afterwards Goblin would be able not only to reach its heights but even further refine what the band already delivered in their first record.
While “Profondo Rosso” had been partly composed by Giorgio Gaslini, “Suspiria” is a 100% Goblin album, the result of a choral work in which every single musician was inspired at the highest levels.
The band were here able to experiment more with daring and unpredictable combinations of musical instruments such as bouzouki and celesta, tribal percussion, all kinds of sound effects on the voice and on musical instruments, all perfectly combined with the typical mid-70s progressive and jazz-rock Goblin trademark.
Together with “Profondo Rosso” and “Roller” (a non-soundtrack instrumental album released in 1976), “Suspiria” was Goblin’s third hit in just three years, an LP that still today sounds incredibly innovative and … scary! Another masterpiece, a must have for any music lover, nothing less!

“The Other Hell” (L’Altro Inferno) is a 1981 horror movie that was explicitly filmed to exploit the success of Dario Argento’s “Inferno”, even if it has little to nothing in common with it. Set in a convent, the film unabashedly mixes demonic possessions, paranormal phenomena, black magic rituals and murders.
Goblin’s soundtrack consists of various tracks and outtakes from “Buio Omega”, “Patrick” and “Il Fantastico Viaggio del Bagarozzo Mark” that have been accurately put together for this special and unique release; that’s also the main reason why “The Other Hell” is a cult movie especially among American and Japanese horror fans.

Fede speranza caritá (Purple)

J.E.T. is very popular among Italian music collectors because from their ashes came the commercial pop group Matia Bazar, and also among prog collectors because of their LP rarity. Jet (or J.E.T. as their name was usually written) were formed in Genova at the beginning of the 70’s from a previous band of the same name that also included later members of another pop band, Ricchi e Poveri.
Their first album, “Fede speranza carità”, released in 1972, derives from a radical turn in their musical style, to the then popular progressive rock, and is a very good album, with strong hard rock influences and falsetto vocals but with nice use of organ and a solid rhythm section, as in the long “Sinfonia per un re” that sometimes reminds of New Trolls’ multivocal parts and “Il prete e il peccatore”.
In 1974 the band added a female voice (Antonella Ruggiero) and a new drummer (Giancarlo Golzi from Museo Rosenbach) changing name to Matia Bazar and starting a very long and successful career that still lasts today.

Kundalini Shakti Devi

As sometimes happens, the eponymous “Kundalinî Shakti Devî” release is a mysterious album, hidden for decades – was recorded back in 1974! – on a tape stored in some drawer, that has been reopened and rediscovered only today. History repeats: the mastermind of the project, Roberto “Paramhansa” Puddu, managed to put together an ensemble of seven musicians with whom he recorded three long tracks, lasting an average of over 15 minutes each, but the genre in 1974 was already struggling to attract the interest of some music manager who could produce and distribute the LP.

The music is inspired by the classic Italian progressive rock, with lyrics about science fiction (“Sensitivity”, “Galactic Museum”) and criticism of the consumer society (“Flash”), while the ‘external’ influences ‘external’ carry the name of Van Der Graaf Generator and some German cosmic music – just listen to the long instrumental song sections to realize that yourself! An exceptional discovery, to stay besides the minor – but not less important, of course! – classics of Italian prog.

Maxophone (Clear LP)

Maxophone, from Milan, formed in 1973 as a six-piece with an unusual assortment of instruments, due to their past experience as music students. A band of great talents and musicianship, their only LP, released in 1975, came too late to compete with the most important Italian bands of the genre and went sadly unnoticed.

Maxophone, released on the Produttori Associati label (along with Duello Madre one of the few ventures in rock records by this label) is a marvellous album, full of dreamy atmospheres and complex horn arrangements, with good vocal parts in a Genesis style and is nowadays considered as one of the best Italian prog records of all times.

L’Ucello Dalle Piume Di Cristallo

“The Bird with the Crystal Plumage” is a 1970 Italian Giallo film directed by Dario Argento, and the music for the film was composed by Ennio Morricone.
Morricone’s score for the film is a mix of haunting and intense sounds that create an atmosphere of suspense and tension. The use of repetitive piano notes, rhythmic percussion, and eerie electronic sounds provide an unsettling backdrop to the film’s murder-mystery plot.
The score features a memorable main theme: a haunting melody played on a solo flute, accompanied by a simple piano motif and orchestral strings. This theme is used throughout the film, both in its original form and in various variations, to build tension and create a sense of impending danger.

Per una scultura di ceschia

Nascita della Sfera was a group of session musicians assembled by a composer to record a single LP, in this case composer and keyboardist Carlo Barbiera dedicated a full album to the life and works of sculptor Luciano Ceschia (1926-1991), both coming from near Udine, Friuli Venezia Giulia, in the north-east of Italy.
The rare album is a rather original example of experimental electro-acoustic progressive style, mainly based on synth effects and acoustic guitars and often reminding some of Battiato's early works.

Despite the presence of five singers in the line-up, the vocal parts are short, spoken rather than sung. 19 tracks are listed on the cover, but these are connected to form two long suites. All in all an interesting album for the adventurous listeners in search of something different. Gatefold sleeve 180gr. vinyl! (Italianprog.com)

L’Aurora delle Orme (180gr)

One of the most important and loved Italian prog bands, and one of the most famous among foreign listeners.
Le Orme were another of those bands coming from the beat era that had the most convincing musical evolution in the 70’s.

They were formed in Marghera (nearVenice) in1966 but their debut came in 1967 with Fiori e colori, recorded by the original four-piece line-up. The band had a successful single with Senti l’estate che torna and recorded their first album Ad Gloriam at the end of 1968, releasing it the following year.

Housed in a psychy sleeve the album is still regarded as one of the best in the Italian beat, with the music having a slight psychedelic touch in songs like Io non so restare solo, Fumo, Milano 1968.
In 1970 the band signed a contract with Philips, that released their subsequent 10 albums in ten years. The old label Car Juke Box released L’Aurora, a compilation of their singles tracks that’s also very rare now. [source: www.italianprog.com].
