Florida-born saxophonist, composer, poet, actor and playwright Archie Shepp was one of the most articulate exponents of politicized black culture in the late '60s, a time of enormous upheaval and radical thought. Relocating to Paris he made a number of highly influential albums, such as Blasé, that broached the essential themes of freedom and racial equality, and tapped into the bedrock of African-American music. Gospel and blues were a major part of the work, which also had a strong avant-garde sensibility. The band featured stellar vocalist Jeanne Lee and members of Art Ensemble Of Chicago. These trailblazing artists who combined jazz, poetry and radical politics made a definitive musical statement.

Yasmina, A Black Woman (White) https://wpguerssen-test.odoo.rgbconsulting.com/product/yasmina-a-black-woman-white/ Sun, 10 Mar 2024 23:00:00 +0000 https://wpguerssen-test.odoo.rgbconsulting.com/product/yasmina-a-black-woman-white/ Archie Shepp's 1969 album 'Yasmina, A Black Woman' was one of many jazz classics recorded in Paris by great African-American musicians at the end of the Sixties. The use of African instruments in the side-long free jazz opener 'Yasmina' help transform it into something utterly transcendent that pivots away from Western-centric jazz standards. The fusion of hard bop and avant-garde techniques on both tracks on side two - one of them featuring the legendary saxophonist Sonny Rollins - round out a forward-thinking classic.
