If You Ask Me To… https://wpguerssen-test.odoo.rgbconsulting.com/product/if-you-ask-me-to/ Sun, 07 Jan 2024 23:00:00 +0000 https://wpguerssen-test.odoo.rgbconsulting.com/product/if-you-ask-me-to/ If you're a fan of Daptone Records, chances are you've read or heard the name Victor Axelrod, and even if you haven't, you've heard music from his hand. As a producer, arranger, recording and mixing engineer, and keyboardist, his creativity has extended across more than two decades of the label's releases, even dating to its prehistory with Desco Records. If You Ask Me To..., the first LP under his name for the label, is a collection of singles released between 2007-2023 as well as unreleased tracks from Sugar Minott and Binky Griptite.
While previous projects like Ticklah Vs. Axelrod and Roots Combination (produced under the alias Ticklah) were inspired by the Jamaica of the 1970s and 80s, this set specifically channels an earlier period in the 1960s when Jamaica was both strikingly original in its continuum of genres but also closely and empathetically attuned to Black American music. Through Axelrod's exceptional taste and the notable contributions of guitarist Tom Brenneck, original tapes from Bob & Gene's MoDo discography, members of The Frightnrs, and others from the NYC reggae community, the legacy of trailblazing Jamaican artists like Alton Ellis, Tony Gregory, and Ken Parker continue to resonate and inspire a whole new generation of reggae and soul enthusiasts.

I Can Be Cool b/w VERSION https://wpguerssen-test.odoo.rgbconsulting.com/product/i-can-be-cool-b-w-version/ Sat, 06 Jan 2024 23:00:00 +0000 https://wpguerssen-test.odoo.rgbconsulting.com/product/i-can-be-cool-b-w-version/ Producer extraordinaire Victor "Ticklah" Axelrod is back in the saddle, serving up two sides of sublime Island Soul - "I Can Be Cool" b/w "Version". As with his last single for Daptone, Axelrod effortlessly blends the ethereal vocals of our beloved boys from Buffalo, Bob & Gene, with the undeniable feel-good instrumentation of reggae stalwarts, The Inversions. The original Bob & Gene version of "I Can Be Cool" is a bonafide classic on the West Coast low-rider/sweet-soul scene and a staff favorite here at Daptone HQ. Its reggae-charged reboot that we so humbly offer up is sure to take you and the one you love to dizzying, uncharted, slow-dancing heights!

It’s Not What You Know b/w Version https://wpguerssen-test.odoo.rgbconsulting.com/product/its-not-what-you-know-b-w-version/ Sat, 06 Jan 2024 23:00:00 +0000 https://wpguerssen-test.odoo.rgbconsulting.com/product/its-not-what-you-know-b-w-version/ Producer Victor "Ticklah" Axelrod is back with another supple Reggae delight. After the success of The Inversions' last collaboration with Bob & Gene, Axelrod once again takes a seat in the Producer's chair, this time with a tune a little deeper in the catalogue. Originally tweezed from the beautiful MO DO tape boondoggle, back in '05 - '06, this single has been a long-time favorite of the Daptone family.

One night in 1971, frustrated by their lack of the success, Bobby Nunn and Gene Coplin sat in the basement of 50 Orange Street and put together a record expressing said frustration. Equipped with only a guitar, bass, and piano - no drums (though you don't even notice) - the two crafted an immaculate slice of Soul, aptly titled "It's Not What You Know (It's Who You Know)". Fast forward 46 years, and now accompanied by the rocksteady rhythms of The Inversions - the vocal stylings and poignant lyrics are reborn, sounding as fresh today as it did when it was crafted down in that magical basement. The VERSION flip is a delay laden masterpiece produced and arranged by Axelrod. A must for fans of Dub and Reggae alike. A truly gorgeous record!

Telephone Song b/w Tired Of Fighting https://wpguerssen-test.odoo.rgbconsulting.com/product/telephone-song-b-w-tired-of-fighting/ Sat, 06 Jan 2024 23:00:00 +0000 https://wpguerssen-test.odoo.rgbconsulting.com/product/telephone-song-b-w-tired-of-fighting/ Is that the telephone ringing?... Hello?... Oh snap it's Charles Bradley! Oooh, and he's doing his LOVE THING. If Soul is your Goal, you better pick up, because Charles is on your main line, and he definitely can't hold. He's in a way on this record, and it's B-A-D! Phonin', and Moanin, and Groanin' his way back into your heart over one of the nastiest deep soul backing tracks ever cut to wax, courtesy of Dunham's own house sound, Menahan Street Band.

The flipside, Tired Of Fighting, a bold instrumental version gives us another glimpse into the upcoming 'Make The Road By Walking' LP which will be rearing it's head next month from Daptone's youngest and most ornery imprint, Dunham Records. Get it NOW!... He might not call back!

Strictly Reserved For You b/w Let Love Stand A Cha https://wpguerssen-test.odoo.rgbconsulting.com/product/strictly-reserved-for-you-b-w-let-love-stand-a-cha/ Sat, 06 Jan 2024 23:00:00 +0000 https://wpguerssen-test.odoo.rgbconsulting.com/product/strictly-reserved-for-you-b-w-let-love-stand-a-cha/ Daptone Records is proud to present the latest and greatest single from Dunham Records and the "Screaming Eagle of Soul", Mr. Charles Bradley - "Strictly Reserved for You" b/w "Let's Give Love a Chance" from the latest full-length, Victim of Love. Fuzzed drenched guitar riffs and far-out sophisticated arrangements pepper the soulful sounds we've all come to love from CB and Co. On the A-Side, Bradley takes you on a psychedelic soul-ride out of the city and into the country - featuring world class backup vocals by Staten Island newest sensation, The Sha La Da's. When you drop the needle, find a nice chair and close your eyes - you'll be sitting shotgun with your arm catching the cool country air as an early model convertible takes the scenic route to the place in your mind where the memories of loves present and past coalesce in an endless summer. The flip features "Let Love Stand a Chance," a pleading ballad that is equal parts heartbreak and hope. With its first class horn line and well-fed beat, this one will have the DJ's shouting "Couples Only!"

In anticipation for the forthcoming full length 'Changes', it brings us great pleasure to ring in 2016 with 'Change for the World' b/w 'Revelation'. On this single, Charles, backed by Menahan Street Band, take the psychedelically seasoned soul flirted with on 2013's 'Victim of Love', and expands on it. Marrying heavy rhythm and tape delay with Charles' pleading vocal performance, it lurks in the ether, engaging your psyche in ways that will make you think there's more to this life than previously imagined. It's a Revelation!

Whatcha Doing (To Me) B/W Strike Three https://wpguerssen-test.odoo.rgbconsulting.com/product/whatcha-doing-to-me-b-w-strike-three/ Sat, 06 Jan 2024 23:00:00 +0000 https://wpguerssen-test.odoo.rgbconsulting.com/product/whatcha-doing-to-me-b-w-strike-three/ With the ever-growing demand for Victor "Ticklah" Axelrod productions it is our profound pleasure to present his latest masterpiece "Whatcha Doing (To Me)" b/w "Strike Three." Originally a stand-out album track from Charles Bradley's Changes long player - then titled "You Think I Don't Know (But I Know)" - Axelrod and Co. artfully transform the Soul groover into an early '70s reggae stroller, ala Bunny Lee. Charles' signature plaintive vocals provide a beautiful juxtaposition to the lighthearted bounce of the Inversion's Island beat. On the flip you'll find the Dub version titled Strike Three, that's sure to make our beloved DJ demographic select the number 2 in the ol' order box. Thankfully CB was able to hear this version before he passed, to which he said "Ooooooo! I LOVE IT!" We think you will too!

"Tommeyy! This is the lady I was telling you about. You gotta hear her sang!" To which LaRose said, "This is the guy you were talking about? He don't look like no funky producer to me. He look like one of them rock & rollers." Well, our friend TNT invited LaRose and CB back to the old Dunham Sound Studio and set out to prove just how funky he could be. "What if I told you that curly haired dude over there was the baddest drummer you ever heard?" asked TNT to Rose. "Him? You guys are weird." The duets that unfolded that night are on this seven-inch piece of wax: Two instant funky pizza party classics.
