An iconic figure of the Bossa Nova, Brazilian pianist, composer and arranger Joao Donato (1934- 2023) introduced a new original rhythm pattern to the genre. He was profoundly influential, having inspired generations of musicians. Joao Gilberto confessed to having taken his bossa nova beat at the guitar from Donato’s piano playing. Presented here in it’s entirety is Donato’s album Muito Ã Vontade, recorded in a quartet format in 1962 and featuring the great Milton Banana on drums. Jazz Samba is a bossa nova album by Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd released by Verve Records in 1962. Jazz Samba signaled the beginning of the bossa nova craze in America. Stan Getz was the featured soloist and the tracks were arranged by Charlie Byrd, who had first heard bossa nova during a tour of Brazil in 1961.

Born in Bahia, Brazil, singer/song writer Joao Gilberto (1931-2019) was a true legend of bossa nova. While Antonio Carlos Jobim set the standard for the creation of bossa nova in the mid-’50s, with songs like “The Girl From Ipanema” and “Desafinado”, it was Gilberto who brilliantly reimagined and, arguably, defined the genre.

Baden Powell de Aquino, known as Baden Powell, was one of the most famous Brazilian guitarists and composers of his time. He mixed classical techniques, popular harmony and swing, and performed in varied styles such as bossa nova, samba, Brazilian jazz and Brazilian popular music. This release presents his second album as a leader, Um violão na madrugada, with three bonus tracks from 1959 and a version of his composition “Consolação” recorded with American flautist Herbie Mann.
