Sweet Dandelion presents you the milestone album of British R&B. Alexis Korner, interested in the new Blues and Jazz sounds coming from America, started playing at the Blues Sessions that Chris Barber set up at The Marquee.

It was there that Korner formed, together with Ciryl Davies, the Blues Incorporated, who shortly after obtained their own weekly residence that, as the original liner notes to the album read, would gather every thursday a crowd of more than seven hundred people. The band would offer a number of emerging musicians of the early 1960s the chance to join them on stage. The list of artists who participated is inmense, and includes essential artists in British rock history, such as Mick Jagger, Graham Bond, Eric Burdon, Long John Baldry, Brian Jones, Art Wood, Ginger Baker and many, many more.

The band, and this seminal debut album, proved to be the starting point for the whole British R&B scene and for most of the early and mid 60s english rock / beat bands, turning this album into an undeniable slice of rock'n'roll history.

Mantle-Piece

Following the breakup of Cream, lyricist/vocalist Pete Brown formed his Battered Ornaments with guitarist Chris Spedding, drummer Rob Tait, bassist Butch Potter, percussionist Pete Bailey and saxophonist Nisar Ahmed Khan, but during the recording of sophomore album Mantle Piece, Brown fell out with Spedding, resulting in his departure. The resultant spacey venture has jazz and blues shades, riding the sonic waves under Spedding’s direction, with Khan’s sax and Potter’s bass fitting foils to Spedding’s guitar and keyboards. This is another great piece of the Spedding puzzle, with pleasantly meandering interludes.

Heavy Blues, check… Fuzz, check… Psychedelic, check! At 14 years of existence Italy’s Black Elephant return with a monster of an album entitled The Fall of the Gods. We are talking album of the year material! It is that good.
In 2018 the band unleashed Cosmic Blues, a true underground classic. In 2020 the band delivered the Japanese themed Seven Swords. The DNA shared between these two albums are very simple: both are collections of classic-minded heavy groovers, picking the best the ’70s, ’90s and ’10s had to offer in face melting riffery.
The Fall of the Gods continues in the tradition of their two previous sonic gems, and really takes things to a heavier place, both figuratively, and literally. Band leader Alessio Caravelli gave us this insight: “The theme this time around is the fall, from the decay to the reborn… After the last very tough years for all societies, we understood that many principles and colossus have fallen, exactly like gods and ancient cultures such as Maya and Aztec did. This has been also the inspiration for our graphic designer Farfante, who hand drew the cover and art for the new album with these concepts in mind.”
A wide range of dynamics are present (All Them Witches come to mind). Hints of Hendrix meld with moments of 90’s Shoegaze (think the Verve’s A Storm in Heaven album), and then head down a long desert highway that would make Brant Bjork feel at home.
Fuzz pedals preach on, the sky cracks, and the riffs crush. The world’s ending anyway. You might as well have some fun with it.

Moment of Truth

Bronx bard Tom Crosgrove got his start in garage rock group Elegant Four, AKA the Elegants, forming Brethren with bassist Stu Woods and drummer Rick Marotta, the unit backing Al Kooper in tandem with their own career; future Bowie keyboardist Mike Garson completed the picture. The great Dr John appeared on their self-titled debut and wrote opener ‘Loop Garou’ for Moment Of Truth, a heady blend of swamp rock and gospel-tinged blues rock, with fine finishing touches from top NY session players; Crosgrove’s rocking guitar riffs and Garson’s keyboard melodies really shine. Another lost gem, ripe for rediscovery!

The Studio Sessions 1971-72 (CD)

Castle Farm was a British band from the early 70s with a powerful, guitar based hard-rock-blues sound with elements of glam and proto-metal.

Here’s their rare and sought after privately pressed 45 from 1972, ‘Hot-Rod Queen’ b/w ‘Mascot’ (originally released on their own label, Farm Records) plus 1971-72 unissued studio recordings.

Originally a four-piece band, they later brought in John Aldrich, with his super-clean lead guitar style, to supplement Gram ‘Tex’ Benike’s killer slide work and create a dynamic dual-guitar sound, adding so much more colour and depth to the band’s music. With a solid rhythm section of ‘Spyder’ Curphey (and latterly his brother Roger) on bass and Steve Traveller on drums, and with Denny Newman’s powerful and resonant vocals, the band progressed to the university and college circuit all over England, supporting major acts like Rory Gallagher, Deep Purple, Atomic Rooster, Savoy Brown, Climax Blues Band, Quintessence and many others.

On this 1968 album Collins definitely adopted the funky R&B Hammond vibe (while peppering his Texas Twang over top). There’s a sensitive homage to The Meters on the lead off track “Do the Sissy” while some other cuts have a definitive Booker vibe. An amazing R&B/soul combination while keep on hold the blues roots.

Strong Persuader

The fifth studio album by American blues singer and guitarist Robert Cray, Strong Persuaderwas recorded at the Los Angeles studios Sage & Sound and Haywood’s under producers Bruce Bromberg and Dennis Walker.
Released by Mercury Records and Hightone Records on November 17, 1986, it marked Cray’s mainstream breakthrough and by 1995 it had sold over two million copies. The album was ranked #42 on Rolling Stones list of the 100 greatest albums of the ’80s.

Live At Filmore West – Close Night July 4, 1971

Promoter Bill Graham announced the lineup for the final week of San Francisco’s Fillmore West one day after he closed New York’s Fillmore East. He ended three years of historic shows with five nights of music billed as “the bands that built the Fillmore.” The final night, July 4, 1971, featured Santana, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Tower of Power. Camera crews recorded the week’s events for the documentary Last Days of the Fillmore.
