‘A Chicken to Hug’. An intriguing, personal album: clearly Caedmon from the first note, but come of age. A 2010 album of twelve recently penned songs from Caedmon’s original line up: Angela Webb (Naylor), Jim Bisset, Ken Patterson, Sam Wilson and Simon Jaquet.

The much loved fragile female vocals, searing electric guitar licks, ‘cello, mandolin and bass remain from the ’70s sound; now supplemented with accordion, drum kit, trombone, and whistle.

32 years on from their eponymous album ‘Caedmon’ the content of the songs is personal, poignant and sometimes challenging.

Acoustic acid folk, mixed, in well-judged doses, with jazz, soul, African and gospel groove’.

A limited digipak special initial release (1000 copies).

“Day Of Light”, the first album by Chicago musician Constantine, released as a private edition in 2015, took the underground psych-folk scene by storm and it’s now a cult album between psychedelic aficionados. So we at Guerssen are pleased to announce the release of Constantine’s second effort: “In Memory Of A Summer Day” is another psychedelic folk-rock gem filled with pastoral tales of adventure, beauty and sorrow.
Housed in a whimsical storybook-illustrated gatefold sleeve (artwork by Stephen Titra of O.W.L), and includes twelve lyric insert pages.

El Petit de Cal Eril surprised me profoundly in 2009 with his debut “I les sargantanes al sol”, a very fresh and innocent psychedelic folk album that made it somehow big in Catalonia. Then he did the nice and dark “Vol i dol”, but before all that he did this unreleased album, in 2007, that was circulating only on a short CDR run for friends. But this is not a demo, this is a great LP in its own right, with similarities to his debut but much more electric. Now it’s released as limited vinyl of 500 copies, numbered and in a very nice packaging.

Manifestación (CD)

Pigmy is the solo project of Vicente Maciá, founding member of 90s Spanish psych band Carrots.

Highly influenced by late 60s / early 70s UK psych, folk-rock and baroque pop (think Magna Carta, Fairfield Parlour, Pete Dello, Duncan Browne, Cat Stevens, Amazing Blondel…) as well as Spanish 70s folk-pop / SSW (Solera, José y Manuel, Vainica Doble…), Pigmy surprised everyone with his previous two albums, “Miniaturas” and “Hamsterdam”, which are now cult items between psych-folk fans.

After a long period of songwriting and recording, Pigmy returns with “Manifestación”, his long-awaited third album. And the result is stunning. Magical, out-of time psychedelic folk-pop, in the same vein of “Hamsterdam” but this time incorporating medieval / renaissance instruments (lute, recorder…), giving “Manifestación” a very unique feel.

A Latin poem opens the album , followed by the medieval sounding “Almendros en Flor” with great use of flute. “Manifestación”, inspired by the “Rosarium Philosophorum” alchemy book from 1550, features the two main ingredients from the new Pigmy sound: psychedelia and renaissance music.

We hear echoes of the first Duncan Browne on “El Hombre Menguante”. Medieval atmosphere a la Magna Carta on “Incienso y Bengala”, featuring trumpets and flugelhorn: “White magic from your lute, it sounds a strange equation”.

“Ana” is delicious folk-pop.

Things get quite proggy on “Lo Sagrado en lo Profano”, bringing to mind those obscure British bands from the early 70s on labels like Dawn or Neon.

On “Mi Canción”, Pigmy sings about crickets and grasshoppers to the rhythm of progressive, pastoral folk-rock. “Lachrimae Pavan” is an instrumental piece played only with lute.

“It’s me, let me in, I want to show you a garden”, sings Pigmy on “Déjame Entrar”, a melancholic folk song featuring violin, acoustic guitar, percussion and recorder.

“Septiembre” closes the album in a stellar way, folk-pop with female backing vocals, organ, vibraphone…

We welcome Pigmy to the Guerssen catalogue, where he’ll sure feel at home between our reissues of 60s-70s psych and folk-rock and current psych-folk acts like Constantine.

Ryan Pollie is an American musician from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that now lives in Los Angeles, California. Pollie is primarily known for music under his own name and as Los Angeles Police Department. He is also a music producer that mostly self-produces his own albums.

Compared the music to ’70s songwriters like Jackson Browne and Graham Nash, STARS is his new album. First one with Mapache and a great collection of songs that connects him with the 70’s tradition while he writes his own path in this century. From the ambitious structures of The Shore House through the infectious pop of Don’t Lie, Stars is a pocket full of surprises.

In 2014, while in Tel Aviv to play a solo show, Rudi Protrudi was taken into a studio to cut an acoustic solo album – just him and his guitar. Since then the tracks have been sitting on the shelf – until, that is, Rudi decided to take them into a Berlin studio and add additional instrumentation to some of the tracks. The track selection reflects a good portion of songs he had included in his live set, a diverse sampling of blues, country, and folk.

Folk rock / power pop band THE SUMMER SUNS formed in Perth, Western Australia in 1986 as one off project to release Kim Williams’ songs “Honeypearl” & “Rachel Anne”. The popularity of the single saw The Summer Suns become a more permanent fixture in the Perth scene, 1986 – 1996, releasing records on most of the world’s best indie labels including Easter, Waterfront, Bus Stop, Parasol, Spring & Get Hip.
Although plying his songwriting trade in other bands and other genres, Williams never entirely gave up on his love for melodic music. After some time playing sadcore then garage rock he formed THE LOVE LETTERS with Katherine Browne, playing music very much like The Summer Suns unplugged.
In 2013 with a stockpile of tunes he began working simultaneously on a new SUMMER SUNS album and a LOVE LETTERS album with different versions of some songs to appear on both records. With Williams playing most of the instruments and producing the recordings, time took its toll. Katherine Browne quit to concentrate on her real career leaving Williams to decide what to do with the two projects. With about 30 recordings to choose from he decided to edit it down to a single project under THE SUMMER SUNS banner. Thus EULALIE was born & self released in a limited vinyl edition of 100 copies, each numbered and with a unique vinyl colour and photo taken by Kim. With literally no publicity at all the album quickly sold out.
With demand for this now impossible to find folk rock / power pop LP increasing over the years, HANKY PANKY RECORDS is set to reissue it in a limited edition of 250 copies with improved detailed cover and 2 bonus tracks!

Manos Ocultas: A Contemporary Guitar Music Compila

With the instrumental solo guitar as the chosen form for the infinite expressive possibilities it offers, Philatelia Records brings together twelveof the most important contemporary Spanish guitarists on this album. Within the genreless, meditative or evocative song, Isasa has becomethe most recognized Spanish artist. The Galician project Borealis, pioneer of the Spanish neo-folk scene, follows a similar drift of reverie and spirituality. Also included are singer-songwriters who show their instrumental inventiveness with unplaceable folkloric nuances, such as Joseba Irazoki and Fajardo, a ‘Majorero’ based in Gran Canaria. Negro is from Valencia, from the free improvisation scene, which points to a North African imaginary just like the cut signed by Paul Pèrrim, a Gran Canarian guy living in Tarragona. Regarding the style closest to the American Primitive Guitar (‘mestizo’ folk-blues of the Fahey school), three are involved: Oskar Benas, from Barakaldo, also an unclassifiable plastic artist, Xisco Rojo from Madrid and Diego Hdez, a heterodox guitarist based in Tenerife, practitioner of an indistinct and unapologetic variety of sounds. On the electric and more experimental side, tending towards abstraction and minimalism, we find the two women of the compilation: Narcoleptica, a multimedia artist from Seville, and Rosenmüller, from Gran Canaria but based in Madrid, as well as the Valladolid-born Lägrima, equally an explorer, but exploring with an acoustic guitar.
