Goza La Salsa

Los Afroins was the flagship salsa band of the obscure but beloved INS label from Colombia. Their 1975 LP “Goza La Salsa” is just as hard to find as their first record, and contains 10 bright and sassy salsa dura treasures that light up the dance floor with their incessant rhythms, syncopated trumpets and trombone and buoyant melodies. There are smoking covers of hits by Panama’s Bush y sus Magníficos (‘Salsa Al Pindin’) and Bronx timbalero Orlando Marín and His Orchestra (‘Está De Bala’) as well as updated renditions of old Cuban chestnuts ‘La Masacre’ (written by Joseíto Fernández of ‘Guantanamera’ fame) and ‘Matusa’ (originally titled ‘Macusa’, composed by Francisco Repilado aka Compay Segundo). The entire record makes for a very tasty and satisfying party platter filled with guaguancó, mozambique, pachanga, descarga and bolero that deserves to be more accessible and better known by today’s fans of Colombian salsa who may have heard of The Latin Brothers or Sonora Carruseles, but have yet to discover the short/lived but highly sought after Los Afroins. “Goza La Salsa” is presented here in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

A symphony of amaranths

First ever vinyl reissue of this 1972 masterpiece by another of the big names in UK Jazz. Neil Ardley was offered the leadership of the seminal New Jazz Orchestra in 1964. Under his direction the Orchestra moved though different styles and changes of personnel, bringing in musicians such as Mike Gibbs (trombone), Harry Beckett and Henry Lowther (trumpets) or even Jack Bruce (bass), some of them also contributed with the writing of some original compositions, making the NJO the root from which the UK’s 70’s jazz scene was to blossom.
By 1972 the NJO was already defunct, but his legacy remained in the works of its members. Ardley’s ‘A Symphony Of Amaranths’ is a perfect example of what was boiling in the UK jazz scene. It was Ardleys tribute to his idols Duke Ellington and Gil Evans, and featured the skills of some great musicians of the scene including Don Rendell, Stan Tracey, Henry Lowther, Harry Beckett, Jeff Clyne & Jon Hiseman. Side B is inspired by the words of Edward Lear, W. B. Yeats, James Joyce and Lewis Carroll that are musicated by Ardley and feature, among other highlights, Ivor Cutler’s narration of ‘The Dong With A Luminous Nose’ and Norma Winstone’s vocals on ‘Will You Walk A Little Faster’.

Recorded in ’69, Greek Variations & Other Aegean Exercises is irresistible on two counts. First, for its daringly conceived and brilliantly performed music, inspired by Greek folk songs and instrumental textures and deep enough to reveal all its treasures only after many repeated listenings. Second, for being recorded at the moment when the Don Rendell/Ian Carr Quintet, a major force in British straight-ahead jazz since ’62, had broken up and Carr’s equally influential jazz-rock band Nucleus was rising from the ashes.

Soft Winds: The Swinging Harp Of Dorothy As (clear

Back in print ! Dorothy Ashby album from 1961 that also features female vibes player Terry Pollard. Comes with a version of The Skatalites ‘Guns of Navarone’ which is a pretty surreal listening experience. From the original liner notes: “Dorothy Ashby may not be the first jazz harpist (Caspar Reardon) or the first female jazz harpist (Adele Girard), but her good feeling for time and ability to construct melodic, guitar-like lines, mark her as the most accomplished modern jazz harpist. Accompanying her was another Detroit girl, Terry Pollard. Terry’s main instrument is the piano and she is one of the best in the country, bar none. She is also a pretty fair country vibraharpist and in this set, Miss Pollard plays vibes exclusively. With them is still another Detroiter, Herman Wright, who like Miss Pollard has worked with Terry Gibbs and Yusef Lateef, and who also served as Miss Ashby’s regular bassist. Completing the quartet is Jimmy Cobb, drummer for the Miles Davis group. During the proceedings, Cobb travels between brushes and sticks without upsetting the equilibrium of this essentially quiet set. There is wide range of material presented here, from blues like Benny Goodman’s title number, ‘Soft Winds’, and Miss Ashby’s ‘With Strings Attached’, to movie themes such as ‘Laura’, ‘Wild Is the Wind’, and ‘The Guns Of Navarone’. Then there are works by such superior writers of standards as Kurt Weill (‘My Ship’); Gershwin (‘The Man I Love’ and ‘Love Is Here To Stay’)”

Doxy present a combined reissue of legendary jazz harpist and poly-instrumentalist Dorothy Ashby’s Hip Harp and In A Minor Groove, both released separately in 1958. Both albums feature Frank Wess. Dorothy Ashby had a unique soul jazz harp sound, and although the instrument she used is probably more thought of in terms of bedtime lullabies, she actually makes it swing nicely, and with a soulful sound that draws back to traditions of African stringed instruments. Ashby was part of the same scene as Yusef Lateef, and like Lateef, she managed to use odd instrumentation in new contexts, to get a very unique jazz sound.

In A Minor Groove

Dorothy Ashby was the very best and most swinging performer on the multi-stringed instrument associated with the gates of heaven. Here on Earth, Ashby adeptly plucked and strummed the harp like nobody else, as evidenced on a single reissue containing her two best LPs for the Prestige and Prestige/New Jazz labels from 1958 — Hip Harp and In a Minor Groove. Alongside her prior efforts for the Savoy label, they collectively represent a small but substantive discography for the Detroit native in small group settings. With the exceptional flute sounds produced by Frank Wess, the combo plays music that is oriented via a unique sonic palate, further enhanced by the principals in the standards and originals they have chosen. Fellow Detroiter Herman Wright is here on bass, with duties split between legendary drummers Art Taylor and Roy Haynes, who place particular emphasis on subtle brushwork. Of course, the watchword of Ashby’s sound is elegance, as she and Wess weave magical threads of gold and silver through standards like the circular and pristine “Moonlight in Vermont,” the dramatic, slow “Yesterdays,” or the sad “Alone Together.” In a more Baroque or chamber setting, “Charmain” and “It’s a Minor Thing” have Wess and Ashby thinking on a regal or Grecian platform. The variety on this collection is impressive, as you hear cinematic bluesy proclamations on “Autumn in Rome,” striking mystery in “Taboo,” mischievous and sly winks during “Rascallity,” and a sexy calypso-to-swing beat as “You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To” unfolds.

Hip Harp

Born in Detroit in 1932 Dorothy Ashby can be easily recognized as the woman who gave the harp a Jazz voice. In her hands, the harp, an originally classical instrument which seemed to just scare people, became a highly versatile swinging voice able to drive a whole jazz rhythm section. Recorded in 1958 by master Rudy Van Gelder and originally released on the Prestige label, Hip Harp is a perfect example of Ashby’s artistry. At the head of a fine quartet featuring the great Frank Wess on flute, Herman Wright on Bass and master Art Taylor on drums, Ashby creates a unique combination of deeply Jazz elements expressed through a totally new sound.

Stoned Soul Picnic

In the late 1960s, vibraphonist Roy Ayers was among the top young talents in jazz, thriving during a remarkable era for the genre. While Ayers would later become a jazz-funk pioneer and delve heavily into R&B fusions, his third album Stoned Soul Picnic is a masterful showcase of soul-jazz grooves.
Produced by Herbie Mann, Stoned Soul Picnic features a memorable Laura Nyro-penned title track, along with an exceptional lineup of musicians, including Gary Bartz, Hubert Laws, Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, and Grady Tate. Originally released in 1968, this early Roy Ayers classic is now receiving an official reissue via Nature Sounds.

Virgo Vibes

Long before becoming an icon of funk, acid jazz, and R&B, Roy Ayers was a promising young jazz vibraphonist. Originally released in 1967, Virgo Vibes was Ayers’ second album, and his debut for Atlantic.
With five cool, funky jazz tracks, the LP features talented musicians like Joe Henderson, Charles Tolliver, Bruno Carr, Jack Wilson and the mysterious pianist Ronnie Clark (Herbie Hancock playing under a pseudonym). A rare treasure infused with the relaxed, sunny vibe that defined Ayers’ stellar career, Virgo Vibes is now available again on vinyl.
