In 1969, producer and boogaloo godfather Bobby Marin conceived this undeservedly obscure funky, psychedelic Latin soul gem. Released on Ralph Lew’s short-lived Dorado label and engineered by Jon Fausty, Bobby was backed by a top-notch studio band that included Ricardo Marrero, Joey Pastrana, Bernard Purdie, Louie Ramirez, Orlando Marin and Ozzie Torrens. Includes liner notes by genre expert Pablo Yglesias telling the story behind the music. 180g vinyl.

LEGENDARY MEXICAN PSYCH LATIN JAZZ FUNK
REISSUED FOR THE FIRST TIME

Leobardo Acosta Quintanar was born in Huetamo, Michoacán in 1925. He was a notable drummer, composer, arranger, and orchestrator.

In 1970, he recorded a last LP for Capitol with a small combo formed with some of his closest peers. The sound engineer for these sessions, Rogiero Silva, recalls that it happened in the night time. Leo was always very demanding in his studio hours with all of his musicians and that he did not tolerate mistakes or setbacks, but he was fully relaxed and enjoying this one very much.

For this last LP, entitled “ACOSTA” but known as “El Leon”, all the compositions are originals, unlike his previous albums where the labels required him to record at least 6 songs that were hits on the popularity charts.

Egyptian Reggae (Split)

Jonathan Richman’s classic ‘Egyptian Reggae’ has been responsible for setting thousands of discerning dance floors on fire. After getting the obvious Jah twist on a few occasions, so we thought it was about time for the Richman’s song to receive a fun yet respectful cumbia treatment! This cumbia candy has been recorded in Lima by no other than Pancho Acosta, founder and guitarist of Compay Quinto, and one of the greatest cumbia guitar players in Peru. On the flip side we find one of Acosta’s own original songs, ‘Carnaval de Jujuy’, recorded by Austin-based future-cumbia group Money Chicha.

First time 7″ reissue of this mega-rare Bobby Marin produced Latin funk gem. ‘Together People (Pamoja Watu)’ sounds like a cross between James Brown’s ‘It’s A New Day’ and Manu Dibango’s ‘Soul Makossa’, while ‘It’s Your Thing’ is a heavy Latin funk instrumental version of the Isley Brothers classic, featuring screaming Hammond organ. Both are DJ favorites and the original 45 fetches large sums, if you can find a copy.

Goza La Salsa

Los Afroins was the flagship salsa band of the obscure but beloved INS label from Colombia. Their 1975 LP “Goza La Salsa” is just as hard to find as their first record, and contains 10 bright and sassy salsa dura treasures that light up the dance floor with their incessant rhythms, syncopated trumpets and trombone and buoyant melodies. There are smoking covers of hits by Panama’s Bush y sus Magníficos (‘Salsa Al Pindin’) and Bronx timbalero Orlando Marín and His Orchestra (‘Está De Bala’) as well as updated renditions of old Cuban chestnuts ‘La Masacre’ (written by Joseíto Fernández of ‘Guantanamera’ fame) and ‘Matusa’ (originally titled ‘Macusa’, composed by Francisco Repilado aka Compay Segundo). The entire record makes for a very tasty and satisfying party platter filled with guaguancó, mozambique, pachanga, descarga and bolero that deserves to be more accessible and better known by today’s fans of Colombian salsa who may have heard of The Latin Brothers or Sonora Carruseles, but have yet to discover the short/lived but highly sought after Los Afroins. “Goza La Salsa” is presented here in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

La Danza de Los Mirlos

Afrosound’s mission was to emulate the guitar-heavy tropical sounds emanating from Perú and Ecuador at the time. To add to the hippie vibe, there were plenty of whacky improvised vocal asides (called ‘inspiraciones’), plus custom fuzz, wah-wah, flange and echo effects boxes for the guitar and keyboards. A barrage of odd sounding synths, drum machines and other electronic flourishes were also sprinkled in to spice up the proceedings. The dozen tracks on Afrosound’s debut long play make for a surprisingly diverse palette from which these Colombian musicians painted their daring portrait of Peruvian cumbia, returning the favor in bold colors that still resonate almost 50 years later. “La danza de los mirlos” kicks off with most famous Afrosound hit of all, ‘Caliventura’, a genius blend of funk and cumbia. Also, there are several covers including various Colombian costeño classics, a groove oriented son montuno / cumbia hybrid, Fruko’s bomba-funk ditty ‘El chorrillo’, the melancholic psychedelic cumbia ‘Esperando por ti’ and the rocking cumbia andina gem ‘Cabeza de chorlito’. This lovingly restored reissue features the artwork for the Peruvian edition, which was licensed and issued by Lima’s El Virrey label in 1974.

Aquarius

An amazing bit of Brazilian samba funk that also touches on MPB, bossa nova, jazz. Originally released in 1976, this sought-after gem opens with the beautiful version of Burnier & Cartier’s “Só Tem Lugar Prá Você”, building up a mellow, airy vibe that stays throughout the entire album. Vocal harmonies and arrangements and excellent guitar work are masterfully combined creating a joyful journey featuring the undisputed talent of Raymundo Bittencourt, Octávio Burnier and Paulo Moura. Assim Assado (Purple vinyl)

The name of the band and the cover of the disc explicitly reveal the influence: Secos&Molhados. Investing in androgenia, progressive rock and samba-soul, Assim Assado tried to be a response of the small CID label to the enormous success that the Secos&Molhados did to the young public. Led by Miguel de Deus (formerly Os Brazões), who signed most of the compositions and assumed the guitar and vocals, the group never took off, leaving only this LP, now almost forgotten. Curiosity: in 1977 Miguel de Deus falls headlong into funk, casting the rather interesting (and rare) “Black Soul Brothers” Also repressed on Groovie Records.
Band formed by Miguel de Deus in 1974, inspired by the Secos&Molhados and making clear both in the name, which is copied from a song of Secos&Molhados, both on the cover of the band’s only album. Also the visual was well androgen but the Music, a mixture of psychedelic, Progressive and a strong touch of Brazilian Soul music. The only album that had the same name as the band, did not get repercussion despite presenting a lot of quality. Now the repress of this rare pearl brings to the light the huge talent of Miguel De Deus.
