Stoned Soul Picnic https://wpguerssen-test.odoo.rgbconsulting.com/product/stoned-soul-picnic/ Thu, 27 Feb 2025 23:00:00 +0000 https://wpguerssen-test.odoo.rgbconsulting.com/product/stoned-soul-picnic/ In the late 1960s, vibraphonist Roy Ayers was among the top young talents in jazz, thriving during a remarkable era for the genre. While Ayers would later become a jazz-funk pioneer and delve heavily into R&B fusions, his third album Stoned Soul Picnic is a masterful showcase of soul-jazz grooves.
Produced by Herbie Mann, Stoned Soul Picnic features a memorable Laura Nyro-penned title track, along with an exceptional lineup of musicians, including Gary Bartz, Hubert Laws, Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, and Grady Tate. Originally released in 1968, this early Roy Ayers classic is now receiving an official reissue via Nature Sounds.

Originally released in 1967, Virgo Vibes was Ayers' second album, and his debut for Atlantic.
With five cool, funky jazz tracks, the LP features talented musicians like Joe Henderson, Charles Tolliver, Bruno Carr, Jack Wilson and the mysterious pianist Ronnie Clark (Herbie Hancock playing under a pseudonym). A rare treasure infused with the relaxed, sunny vibe that defined Ayers' stellar career, Virgo Vibes is now available again on vinyl.

Babadu! https://wpguerssen-test.odoo.rgbconsulting.com/product/babadu/ Sun, 20 Aug 2023 22:00:00 +0000 https://wpguerssen-test.odoo.rgbconsulting.com/product/babadu/ Produced by Hawaiian AOR legend Kirk Thompson (of KALAPANA and Lemuria fame) singer-songwriter Babadu's sole album is mellow Hawaiian soul from start to finish.
The 1970s saw the birth of Contemporary Hawaiian music, a genre inspired by the popular sounds of the mainland US, but with a distinct, Hawaiian feeling. Perhaps the most popular form of Contemporary Hawaiian music was Hawaiian AOR. It makes sense - mellow grooves and laid-back bass lines seem perfect for the pristine beaches of Waikiki; yet the genre would take off, gaining popularity in lands as far away as Japan.
Babadu! is firmly in the tradition of Hawaiian AOR, with the vocals of Babadu himself resting perfectly atop backing tracks that perfectly meld the sounds of the island with mainland yacht rock. Album opener "We're Not To Blame" is a perfect example, with tropical flutes practically dancing over Babadu's soulful vocals and a groove that'll have anybody nodding their head. With Kirk Thompson of Kalapana handling production, arranging and keyboards - much like he did for Hawaiian AOR legends Lemuria, the album sounds simply sublime. Reissued with an obi-strip for the first time ever, with the handsome face of Babadu himself adorning the cover, you already know you're in for a soulful, good time with this album.

Talking To The People https://wpguerssen-test.odoo.rgbconsulting.com/product/talking-to-the-people/ Mon, 21 Apr 2025 22:00:00 +0000 https://wpguerssen-test.odoo.rgbconsulting.com/product/talking-to-the-people/ There's always a risk you run, when championing a record like Talking to the People, of overstating your case. There's generally an easy-to-grapple-with reason why something that the vast majority of the listening public hasn't listened to hasn't been heard. Poor distribution, something slightly missing in the singles, critical misunderstanding, bad timing; all those things have coalesced to make many deserving records lose out on their just desserts.
But pressing play on Talking to the People really does feel like something revelatory, something transcendent. It's like if the Bar-Kays of the early '70s had a woman on the mic, or if Funkadelic leaned more into rock, or if Sly Stone had half the budget. It's an album that feels contemporary -- it almost predicts Black genre experimentalists like SAULT -- but also fits so neatly in with everything happening in Detroit and Memphis funk in 1973. It failed to find an audience because the audience it predicts -- the musical omnivore who could see the strands between everything -- hardly existed in earnest by then.

Telephone Song b/w Tired Of Fighting https://wpguerssen-test.odoo.rgbconsulting.com/product/telephone-song-b-w-tired-of-fighting/ Sat, 06 Jan 2024 23:00:00 +0000 https://wpguerssen-test.odoo.rgbconsulting.com/product/telephone-song-b-w-tired-of-fighting/ Is that the telephone ringing?... Hello?... Oh snap it's Charles Bradley! Oooh, and he's doing his LOVE THING. If Soul is your Goal, you better pick up, because Charles is on your main line, and he definitely can't hold. He's in a way on this record, and it's B-A-D! Phonin', and Moanin, and Groanin' his way back into your heart over one of the nastiest deep soul backing tracks ever cut to wax, courtesy of Dunham's own house sound, Menahan Street Band.

The flipside, Tired Of Fighting, a bold instrumental version gives us another glimpse into the upcoming 'Make The Road By Walking' LP which will be rearing it's head next month from Daptone's youngest and most ornery imprint, Dunham Records. Get it NOW!... He might not call back!

Strictly Reserved For You b/w Let Love Stand A Cha https://wpguerssen-test.odoo.rgbconsulting.com/product/strictly-reserved-for-you-b-w-let-love-stand-a-cha/ Sat, 06 Jan 2024 23:00:00 +0000 https://wpguerssen-test.odoo.rgbconsulting.com/product/strictly-reserved-for-you-b-w-let-love-stand-a-cha/ Daptone Records is proud to present the latest and greatest single from Dunham Records and the "Screaming Eagle of Soul", Mr. Charles Bradley - "Strictly Reserved for You" b/w "Let's Give Love a Chance" from the latest full-length, Victim of Love. Fuzzed drenched guitar riffs and far-out sophisticated arrangements pepper the soulful sounds we've all come to love from CB and Co. On the A-Side, Bradley takes you on a psychedelic soul-ride out of the city and into the country - featuring world class backup vocals by Staten Island newest sensation, The Sha La Da's. When you drop the needle, find a nice chair and close your eyes - you'll be sitting shotgun with your arm catching the cool country air as an early model convertible takes the scenic route to the place in your mind where the memories of loves present and past coalesce in an endless summer. The flip features "Let Love Stand a Chance," a pleading ballad that is equal parts heartbreak and hope. With its first class horn line and well-fed beat, this one will have the DJ's shouting "Couples Only!"
